Prague Skyline Photo Blogger

Serendipitously I had the pleasure of going to Prague for a week in January. I bopped around and saw as much as I could in six days and discovered Prague to be a city full of surprises. Even in the middle of winter I found it to be a lovely little adventure full of history and beauty. Here's a list of a handful of must sees when Czechin' Prague out ;)

OLD TOWN

Save your first impression of Prague for when you get to Old Town (don't let the older airport and the 30 minutes of somewhat industrial drive into the city sway you into thinking Prague is anything but beautiful!)

Old town is separated from the rest of the city by a semi-circular moat and wall and surrounded by the Vltava river. It's stunningly pastel plaster buildings make me wish modern day architects would take a cue from the past. Wander around Old Town to see the Astronomical Clock, Prague University, Old town Square, lots of shopping and yummy food to be found. And for surely stop for a cup of Grog in Prague... (I actually prefer the mulled wine, but I desperately wanted to say I had grog in Prague!)

Pretty Pastels Rings and Buildings

Clearly I have a sweet spot for pastels! Perhaps Prague inspired my big ring collection in my dreams :)

           CHARLES BRIDGE

Charles Bridge Prague

.

It's basically impossible to go to Prague and not notice this beautiful, ancient bridge in the heart of the city. Charles Bridge aka Karluv Most was onstructed between 1357 and 1402... wait what?!!  That's 600 years ago! And it's still standing; that alone is beyond impressive! A short walk over the bridge will provide you with a beautiful view, a bunch of street peddlers and some ancient looking statues.

This particular statue is of John of Nepomuk and said to be good luck and ensure your return to Prague when you rub it.  (Don’t get confused, there is another statue of a shiny dog and a Queen that has been rubbed clean because not everybody knows the legend and therefore rubbed the wrong one = how embarrassing.)

Poor John of Nepomuk used to be the counsel for the Queen, the jealous King wanted to know all the Queens secrets so he tortured poor John to death because he wouldn't reveal any of the Queens secrets. His body was thrown into the river where this statue stands. The body was recovered. Buried. Then reopened 300 years later and get this.... his tongue was in perfect condition & pulsating. 👅 yep! It was considered proof of his incorruptibility & sainthood. 🍻 Here's to Saint John Nepomuk's tongue 👅!

         JOHN LENNON WALL

John Lennon Wall Prague

This must see stop on your Prague visit is a little bit trickier to find than the Charles Bridge. It's just past the west side of the bridge, a short 10 minute winding walk will take you to the John Lennon Wall (across from the French Embassy).  Rumour has it the wall was first spray painted following John Lennon's 1980 assassination, when an artist painted an image of the Beatle along with some lyrics. Western images and ideologies  were banned in Czechoslovakia at that time so the graffiti was essentially a form of protest and was quickly painted over by Prague's secret police. That first painted tribute and all it represented unleashed a steady stream of anti-communist graffiti that the secret police and security cameras have yet to stop. It's been painted white a few times  over, so every time you visit Prague it'll be a different version of peace, love and freedom :)

            PRAGUE CASTLE

Prague Castle

This monster of a castle is not just a tourist attraction, it is the current residence of the Czech President. (Makes the White House look positively boring in comparison!) Prague Castle is the largest ancient castle in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The entire castle complex take up 750,000 square feet (thats over 2000 football fields!). We spend only 3 hours here and merely scratched the surface. I recommend booking a day tour to get a grasp of all this ancient place has to offer.
